Imagine one of the most iconic golf destinations in the world getting a complete makeover—a transformation so bold, it promises to redefine the very essence of the game. That’s exactly what’s happening at The Links at Spanish Bay, one of Pebble Beach Resorts’ four championship courses. But here’s where it gets even more exciting: Pebble Beach Company and the renowned Hanse Golf Course Design (HGCD) have unveiled plans that will not only elevate the course’s prestige but also spark debates among golfers and enthusiasts alike. And this is the part most people miss: the redesign isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about creating a course that’s both more accessible for casual players and more challenging for the pros. Let’s dive into the details.
On February 17, 2026, Pebble Beach Company and HGCD announced their ambitious vision for The Links at Spanish Bay. After the final round is played on March 17, 2026, the course will undergo a comprehensive redesign aimed at rivaling its legendary neighbors along the famed 17-Mile Drive. Led by golf architect Gil Hanse, his partner Jim Wagner, and the HGCD team, the 38-year-old course will be reimagined to fully capitalize on its breathtaking coastal setting. The goal? To make it more enjoyable, strategic, and playable for golfers of all skill levels while ensuring it stands as a worthy test for today’s elite players.
But here’s where it gets controversial: some purists might argue that tinkering with a classic course could dilute its original charm. Yet, the changes are designed to enhance, not erase, its identity. Here’s what’s in store:
- Greens Overhaul: Several green sites, including the 14th and 18th holes, will be relocated. A brand-new par-three hole will replace the current 13th, adding a fresh challenge.
- Bigger, Smoother Greens: Putting greens will expand by approximately 40% and be resurfaced to provide smoother, more receptive targets with greater variety for pin placements.
- Recovery-Friendly Surrounds: The rough around greens will be replaced with low-cut turf, offering players more options for recovery shots.
- Wider Fairways, Smarter Bunkers: Fairways will widen by about 30%, and bunkers will be repositioned to create more forgiving yet strategic playing corridors.
- Tee Transformations: Tee complexes will be redesigned to improve sightlines, reduce forced carries, and add excitement. Forward tees will shorten by ~500 yards (totaling 4,705 yards), while championship tees will extend by ~375 yards (totaling 7,115 yards), changing the par from 72 to 71.
- Seamless Cart Paths: The cart path system will be redesigned to blend harmoniously into the natural landscape.
Beyond gameplay, the course’s sustainability will be enhanced with new drainage and irrigation systems, reducing irrigated turf by 12% and adding three acres of environmental habitat. And this is the part most people miss: these eco-friendly measures aren’t just about conservation—they’re about ensuring the course remains playable year-round, even in challenging weather conditions.
Gil Hanse, President and Lead Designer of HGCD, shared his enthusiasm: ‘Working on a project like this is a golf course architect’s dream. The Spanish Bay site is one of the best we’ve seen, where the crashing Pacific surf stimulates all your senses. Pebble Beach Company’s commitment to creating another extraordinary golf experience is truly inspiring.’
David Stivers, CEO of Pebble Beach Company, added: ‘We’re confident the HGCD team will transform Spanish Bay into a must-play course for any golfer visiting Pebble Beach. Their vision is brilliant, and we can’t wait to see it come to life over the next year.’
Slated to reopen on April 17, 2027, just ahead of the 127th U.S. Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links, the new Spanish Bay will join the resort’s portfolio of world-renowned public courses, including Pebble Beach Golf Links, Spyglass Hill, The Hay (designed by Tiger Woods), and the historic Del Monte Golf Course. Bookings are already available through Pebble Beach Resort Reservations.
But here’s the question that’s sure to spark debate: Will the redesigned Spanish Bay live up to the hype, or will it lose the essence that made it a beloved classic? Weigh in below—we’d love to hear your thoughts! In the meantime, construction updates and behind-the-scenes content will be shared on Pebble Beach’s website and social channels.
