A shocking report has revealed the dire situation faced by adults with eating disorders in England. These individuals are forced to endure an agonizing wait of up to 700 days for the treatment they desperately need. But here's where it gets controversial... the disparity between child and adult services is widening, leaving adults with longer wait times and limited access to support.
The National Audit of Eating Disorders (NAED) has exposed a stark reality. On average, adults wait twice as long as children for an assessment and more than 10 times longer for treatment. The eating disorder charity Beat describes this growing gap as particularly worrying.
According to the NAED report, there are significantly more community and inpatient teams dedicated to children and young people compared to adults. The national median wait for community care reveals a stark contrast: children wait 14 days for assessment and 4 days for treatment, while adults face a median wait of 28 days for assessment and 42 days for treatment. Some adults have even reported waiting up to 700 days for treatment, an unacceptable delay that can have devastating consequences.
The report highlights that 3,855 people are currently waiting for an assessment from a community care team, and 4,537 are awaiting treatment. The most common reason for these delays, according to 71% of community teams, is that demand exceeds capacity.
Tom Quinn, director of external affairs at Beat, emphasizes the importance of this audit as a first step towards understanding and improving care for eating disorders in England. He acknowledges the dedication of community care staff but expresses concern over the devastating impact of limited local support on patients.
"It's particularly concerning to witness the widening gap between child and adult services, with longer wait times, inaccessible self-referral options, and inconsistent service availability for adults. Certain eating disorders, such as binge eating disorder, Arfid, and night eating syndrome, are subject to a real postcode lottery," Quinn said.
Beat's community highlights the courage required to reach out for help, making the news of unavailable local support all the more devastating. Quinn emphasizes the importance of access to intensive community or day services close to home, as continuing to live at home often leads to the best outcomes.
An NHS England spokesperson acknowledged the encouraging average wait times for children but emphasized the need for consistent support across all ages. Every local health system now has at least one specialist eating disorder service for adults and children, and the NHS is committed to using the report's findings to reduce waiting times for all patients.
"It's vital that people who are struggling come forward and speak with their local GP practice as soon as possible," the spokesperson added.
