A haunting discovery on January 10th, 1979, shook the world and exposed the dark underbelly of a regime. Vietnamese photographer Ho Van Tay, drawn by an overpowering stench, stumbled upon a former high school that had been transformed into a prison of horrors. This was Security Prison 21, or S-21, a place where over a thousand people were held at any given time, subjected to unimaginable atrocities.
The Khmer Rouge, in their quest for an extreme communist utopia, had evacuated Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, leaving it a ghost town. The city, once bustling with three million residents, was now a silent witness to the horrors that unfolded within its walls.

S-21 was not just a prison; it was a living nightmare. Prisoners were chained to the floor or walls, forbidden from speaking, and given barely enough food to survive. Those who dared to drink water or speak without permission faced brutal beatings. The rules were strict, and those who broke them were subjected to lashings or electric shocks. Even crying during these tortures was prohibited.
The guards, mostly teenagers, were themselves victims, forced to carry out these heinous acts. Under relentless torture, prisoners confessed to false conspiracies, implicating themselves and others with the CIA, KGB, or Vietnamese authorities. And then, they were led to their final destination - the killing fields, where they met their end at the hands of makeshift weapons, conserving precious ammunition.
Of the 20,000 souls detained at S-21, only 12 survived. Among the victims were foreigners who had the misfortune of being in the country after May 1975. Even a simple mistake, like a boat straying into Cambodian waters, could lead to torture and murder.
It took until 2012 for the chairman of this prison to face justice. Kang Kek lew, a former maths teacher, served just eight years before passing away from natural causes. The scale of the genocide is staggering - an estimated quarter of Cambodia's population perished between 1975 and 1979.
