Under the guidance of Kim Hellberg, Middlesbrough showcased an impressive display characterized by skillful ball possession and the relentless work ethic that the Swedish manager expects from his players. The crucial goals in the first half came from Tommy Conway and Riley McGree, effectively sealing a vital win in the ongoing race for promotion.
Hellberg opted for an unchanged starting lineup for this match, although there were notable additions on the bench. Deadline-day recruit Joe Wildsmith, promising academy talent Cruz Ibeh, and the returning Kaly Sene all made the squad.
Initially, Boro found themselves under pressure, but they quickly created the most significant opportunity within the first ten minutes. Yet, true to their nature, Boro didn’t make things entirely straightforward. With just over 15 minutes left on the clock, they were caught napping at the back. Sheffield United earned a free-kick from their own half, and a long ball found Gus Hamer, who set up Bamford behind the defense. The former Boro striker struck decisively past Sol Brynn, narrowing the gap for the hosts.
Despite the tense finish, Middlesbrough benefited from the reckless actions of Joe Rothwell, who received a straight red card ten minutes before the end for a dangerous challenge on Alan Browne as he was breaking through, making Boro’s task considerably easier.
This win illustrates the remarkable turnaround for Middlesbrough under Hellberg, especially considering that back in November, Coventry’s victory at the Riverside had put them ten points clear atop the table.
