While many, including the Prime Minister and Cabinet ministers, expressed delight at Abd El-Fattah's release and reunion with his family, a storm of criticism followed. The Jewish Leadership Council and senior Tory Robert Jenrick took issue with the UK government's "effusive welcome," citing past social media posts by Abd El-Fattah that allegedly showcase "extremist" views.
And this is the part most people miss: the controversy lies not just in the posts themselves but in the timing of their revelation. A No. 10 source clarified that welcoming Abd El-Fattah's return was not an endorsement of his political views, and that these posts had not been brought to the attention of key government figures until recently.
Abd El-Fattah, a British-Egyptian dual national, had been imprisoned in Egypt since 2019 on charges of spreading false news. His imprisonment was deemed a breach of international law by UN investigators, leading to his eventual release through a presidential pardon.
The activist's case has a long history, with Labour's predecessors also lobbying for his release. Abd El-Fattah was a prominent figure in Egypt's 2011 Arab Spring uprising and had gone on hunger strikes during his imprisonment.
Sir Keir's comments on X, expressing his delight at Abd El-Fattah's return and praising his family and supporters, were met with criticism. Shadow justice secretary Mr. Jenrick labeled these remarks as a "personal, public endorsement" by the Prime Minister, arguing that given Abd El-Fattah's past statements about violence, Jews, and the police, such an endorsement was a serious error in judgment.
Mr. Jenrick referred to online posts, some dating back to 2010, that appeared to be from Abd El-Fattah's X account, calling for violence towards "zionists" and the police. These posts, which could not be independently verified, led to the withdrawal of Abd El-Fattah's nomination for the European Parliament's Sakharov Prize in 2014.
In a letter to the Prime Minister, Mr. Jenrick asked for clarification on whether he was aware of Abd El-Fattah's statements before posting his delight at his release. He questioned whether the Prime Minister condemned these statements, including the endorsement of killing Israelis and "zionists," and the calls to kill police and burn Downing Street. Mr. Jenrick urged the Prime Minister to "correct the record" and withdraw his "unalloyed endorsement."
The Jewish Leadership Council added their voice to the criticism, expressing concerns in the wake of recent antisemitic attacks in Manchester and Bondi Beach. They stated their dismay at the government's celebration of Abd El-Fattah's arrival, seeing it as a reminder of the dangers faced by British Jews.
A Foreign Office spokesperson emphasized that Abd El-Fattah is a British citizen and that his release has been a long-standing priority for successive governments.
