Prepare for trouble, Hollyoaks fans! A storm is brewing as a mysterious newcomer, Jenson, arrives with a hidden agenda that could shatter lives. But here’s where it gets controversial: is he truly a villain, or is there more to his story than meets the eye? Let's dive into the details and see what's in store for Mercedes McQueen and the rest of Hollyoaks.
Former Coronation Street and Waterloo Road star Ryan Clayton is stepping into the role of Jenson, and showrunners are promising a character who will stir things up from the get-go. Jenson's early storylines will see him crossing paths with some of Hollyoaks' most iconic residents: the dangerous Warren Fox, the ever-vulnerable Mercedes McQueen, and the hapless Tinhead O'Leary. This already sounds like a recipe for chaos, doesn't it?
Remember that explosive New Year trailer? It gave us a sneak peek at Jenson confronting Tinhead about a debt. But this seems to be a mere distraction. Jenson's also keeping a close watch on Warren, and, perhaps most intriguingly, he's making a beeline for Mercedes while she's in rehab. And this is the part most people miss: could Mercedes be his ultimate target? It certainly seems that way. His true intentions appear to lie far beyond a simple loan collection.
Recently, Ryan Clayton sat down for his first exclusive interview about the role, offering some tantalizing hints about what we can expect from Jenson. Let's break it down:
How did the role come about? Unlike the typical audition process, Hollyoaks directly contacted Ryan. He explains, "Hollyoaks got in contact and asked if I would be interested in joining the show... the turnaround was very quick." The immediacy of the offer was a major draw for Clayton, bypassing the often-lengthy waiting game that actors face. So, it seems like Hollyoaks knew exactly who they wanted for this role.
Why another long-running show? Having already starred in Corrie and Waterloo Road, Ryan emphasizes that the character is paramount. "If you're going to be playing a character for a while, you want something that you can sink your teeth into. I'm definitely doing that with Jenson!" This suggests a complex, multi-layered character that will keep both Clayton and the audience engaged.
What can viewers expect? Prepare for a manipulator! Ryan describes Jenson as "very cunning and slippery... like a sly little fox." This immediately paints a picture of someone who is not to be trusted, a master of deception who will likely cause significant trouble for the residents of Hollyoaks.
How much did show bosses reveal upfront? Soap operas are constantly evolving, even for the actors. "Not everything," Ryan admits. "As always with continuing dramas, they're developing the story... you're always learning new things about your character." This organic approach to storytelling keeps the actors on their toes and allows for flexibility as storylines unfold. However, he also mentioned a pre-filming conversation, "where we went through some ideas and explored Jenson's backstory," indicating that the writers have a solid foundation for the character.
Is Jenson a villain? This is the million-dollar question! Ryan teases, "It's definitely more complicated, because he is a complex character with a past to be explored. I think the writers are playing around with that idea of: is he a good guy or is he a bad guy? It's constantly being pushed and twisted…" This ambiguity is key to Jenson's appeal. He's not a one-dimensional baddie; he's a character with depth and potentially conflicting motivations. Is he a product of his circumstances, or is he inherently malicious? What do you think?
What about his first scenes? Jenson's entry point into Hollyoaks is through Tinhead, who seeks him out for financial assistance. However, Tinhead falsely presents himself as Warren. Ryan reveals, "Jenson's way into the village is through Tinhead, who's come to him for money... Tinhead is pretending that he's Warren, but Jenson has realised that he's not telling the truth." This immediately establishes Jenson as someone who is perceptive and not easily fooled. He's quick to exploit Tinhead's deception: "He's got leverage on Tinhead now and he uses that against him, to get Tinhead to do his dirty work!" It sounds like Tinhead is in for a world of pain.
The Mercedes connection: The trailer hinted at a potential romance between Jenson and Mercedes in rehab. Ryan elaborates, "Well, Jenson's reasons for being in rehab in the first place are up for debate! He learns about Warren and Mercedes' relationship and uses that as a chance to pursue his plans." This confirms that Jenson's presence in rehab is likely not coincidental. He's deliberately targeting Mercedes, potentially to get to Warren or for some other hidden agenda. The question is: are his feelings for Mercedes genuine, or is she simply a pawn in his game? "The audience will be left to question whether Jenson has genuine feelings for Mercedes or not. You just never know what's real with him or what's not. Is it always an ulterior motive? That's what's made him so fun to play so far." This ambiguity is a key element of Jenson's character.
What about Liberty? The trailer also showed Liberty's interest in Jenson. Ryan says, "I think he's flirty with everyone! If he had the opportunity with any girl, I think he'd be happy. I think he's more interested in Mercedes than Liberty, but he is very flirtatious…" So, while Jenson is open to opportunities, his primary focus seems to be on Mercedes. Liberty might just be collateral damage in his larger scheme.
Ryan also discussed working with Jen Metcalfe (Mercedes), Jamie Lomas (Warren), and Phil Olivier (Tinhead), expressing his excitement at collaborating with such talented actors. He even mentioned growing up watching Brookside, making working with Phil Olivier (Tinhead) particularly special.
What's in store long-term? "I'd say just expect the unexpected with Jenson! He's always working on something and constantly plotting." This confirms that Jenson is not a short-term character; he's here to stay and cause significant disruption in Hollyoaks. And this should give you a reason to stay tuned and see what he does.
Will Jenson be sticking around? "There's potential for it, definitely!" So, it seems like the writers have long-term plans for Jenson, depending on how the storylines unfold and how the audience responds to the character.
Finally, Ryan reflected on his previous role in Coronation Street, where his character Josh Tucker was involved in a controversial storyline about male rape. He stated, "Definitely. It's great to tell these stories and represent survivors in that way. It's such important work, making people feel represented and heard." He also acknowledged Hollyoaks' commitment to tackling similar important issues.
