Given Trump’s unpredictable nature and his history of retaliatory trade policies, Coates fears this could jeopardize the already fragile Canada-U.S. trade relationship. ‘It puts our agreement with the U.S. at greater risk,’ he added.
Despite these concerns, Coates acknowledged a silver lining: the collaboration between Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe and Prime Minister Carney. ‘They stood up for Saskatchewan’s interests, and we got something back,’ he said, suggesting that this deal, while imperfect, is a step toward mitigating past tensions.
