England's Ashes journey has come to a close, and the team's captain, Ben Stokes, has some honest reflections. In a post-match interview, Stokes acknowledged that England's own mistakes played a significant role in their 4-1 defeat.
"Australia is a formidable opponent, no doubt. Their performances with bat and ball were outstanding. But we must acknowledge our own shortcomings. We know we're capable of better, and we let ourselves down at crucial moments," Stokes stated.
He continued, "Now is not the time for deep analysis. We have a break before our next Test series, which gives us an opportunity to review and learn. When we return in June, we aim to put things right and show a stronger England."
Stokes highlighted the final Test in Sydney, where England's performance followed a familiar pattern. "We needed more runs, and we let Australia gain an advantage. Looking at the wicket on day five, we could have been in a much stronger position if we'd added another 100 runs."
Despite the defeat, Stokes found positives in the series, particularly in the performances of Jacob Bethell and Josh Tongue. "Bethell seized his opportunity and worked tirelessly. For a young player to step up in an Ashes Test against a strong attack on a challenging wicket is remarkable. Tongue continues to improve with each appearance. We have a talented group to build upon."
The England captain also expressed gratitude for the support received throughout the tour. "Our fans are incredible, and we're grateful for their unwavering support. Even staying until the end means a lot to us. We're honored to represent England and the Barmy Army."
On the other side, Australia's performance was exceptional, especially considering the absence of key players like regular captain Pat Cummins, who played only one Test, and pacer Josh Hazlewood, who missed the entire series. "Finishing on a high is important, especially with the World Test Championship. Getting the result here was incredibly satisfying. A key factor in Australia's success was Mitchell Starc, aged 35, who played all five Tests and delivered an impressive 153.1 overs, taking 31 wickets - the most in the series. "It's going well, and my body is holding up. Being part of this team is a privilege. It's a lot of fun, especially with guys like Travis Head leading the way. I'm just glad to contribute."
Starc also acknowledged some fatigue, especially considering his age and the length of the series. "Scotty [Boland] and I are on the older side, but we got the job done. We're not the youngest, but we played our parts."
"It's been a long journey for the entire squad and staff. We utilized more than just the starting XI, and it's been incredibly rewarding to be a part of this team."
Starc's contributions with the bat were also notable, including fifties in Adelaide and Brisbane. "I'm glad I got some runs early on because I certainly struggled at the end. Bowling is my primary role, but I'm always happy to contribute with the bat, especially when guys like Head are scoring the bulk of the runs."
