A proposed solar farm in north Baldwin County, Alabama, has sparked intense opposition from local residents, who fear it will harm the environment and disrupt the area's rich history. The project, approved by the Public Service Commission to support Meta's data center in Montgomery, has ignited a heated debate among Stockton residents.
The solar farm, spanning 4,500 acres, is part of a larger plan to generate electricity for the data center. However, the community is concerned about the potential environmental consequences, especially given the property's location along the Mobile-Tensaw River Delta, a biodiverse area with wetlands crucial for maintaining water quality in the delta and Mobile Bay. These wetlands also provide habitat for endangered species like the gopher tortoise and Alabama red-bellied turtle.
Local residents, including Nick Williams, a Spanish Fort resident and outdoorsman, have raised historical concerns. The site was once inhabited by the Taensa people, a Native American tribe, and there are Indian mounds still present. Williams emphasizes the importance of preserving the town's history, as some families have lived in the Stockton area for over 200 years.
The proposed solar farm has been met with a strong reaction, with residents feeling blindsided by the development. Alex Mizell, a 16-year-old resident, expressed the desire to grow up in a world where swimming in the water is safe. The community's anger is further fueled by the rapid pace of development in the county, making them feel they have little control over the situation.
To combat the project, residents are pushing back through various means. They are urging Alabama Speaker of the House of Representatives Nathaniel Ledbetter to oppose two bills, SB 71 and HB 392, which they believe would directly impact the solar farm's development. These bills aim to limit environmental regulations and shift the Public Service Commission's structure.
The opposition is confident in their early intervention, with Meagan Fowler stating, 'We caught this early, so I’m very optimistic. I do think we have a fighting chance.' Despite the project's early stages, the community is determined to make their voices heard and protect the environment and their way of life.
