Attention all sports journalists and media professionals: The race to cover the New York Yankees' 2026 season starts now! Beginning today, you can apply online for media credentials to access both Spring Training and the Regular Season. But here's where it gets a bit tricky—and this is the part most people miss—the process is entirely digital, and only Sports Assignment Editors can submit applications. No exceptions.
Print Media, Take Note: If you’re already receiving credentials through the BBWAA, you’re in luck—no need to apply for Yankees-issued credentials. However, Sports Assignment Editors must still email credentials@yankees.com to confirm which staff members will be using BBWAA cards during the 2026 season. It’s a small step, but one that ensures everyone is on the same page.
Why the Fuss About Online Applications? All requests must be submitted through https://credentials.mlb.com. This isn’t just a preference—it’s the only method accepted. If you’re new to this process, you’ll need to create an affiliate profile first. Already applied for Yankees or MLB jewel event credentials in the past? You’re ahead of the game. For newcomers, reach out to the Yankees Media Relations Office at credentials@yankees.com to get set up. And remember, you can’t request credentials for yourself—only a Sports Assignment Editor can do that.
What You’ll Need to Apply: For each individual, you’ll need to upload their name, email, phone number, job description, and a 1” x 1” color headshot in JPEG format with at least 300 dpi resolution. Why the headshot? It’s required for all Yankees events, ensuring smooth access and security.
Spring Training Credentials: If you’re aiming for spring-long access to George M. Steinbrenner Field, you’ll need to cover the team for at least one full week in Tampa. Applications for these credentials close at 5:00 p.m. on February 2. For daily credentials, submit your request by 3:00 p.m. the day before the game. Approved credentials can be picked up at the Steinbrenner Field Press Gate on workout and home game days.
Regular Season Credentials: Here’s where it gets even more specific. Full regular season credentials are only issued to those covering at least 40 home games. Applications must be in by March 13. Daily credentials? Submit by 3:00 p.m. the day before the game. And a crucial point: Spring Training credentials won’t get you into regular season games at Yankee Stadium. Only full regular season credentials will do.
Important Dates to Mark: Credential distribution at Steinbrenner Field starts on February 10, by appointment only. Pitchers and catchers report on February 11, with Aaron Boone’s first media availability the same day. The first full-squad workout is on February 16. As for games, the first Major League spring game is against the Baltimore Orioles on February 20, and the first home game is against the Detroit Tigers on February 21.
Controversial Question: With such strict application requirements, do you think the Yankees are making it harder for smaller media outlets to gain access? Or is this a necessary measure to manage the influx of requests? Let us know your thoughts in the comments—we’d love to hear your perspective!
